Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. Formerly considered to include Schouteden's Swift (Schoutedenapus schoutedeni) as a subspecies. In past, subspecies poensis was considered a subspecies of Plain Swift (Apus unicolor). Species name sometimes misspelt myioptilus.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
poensis (Alexander, 1903) - Bioko I (Fernando Póo, in Gulf of Guinea).
chapini (Prigogine, 1957) - Eastern Zaire, Rwanda and south-western Uganda.
myoptilus (Salvadori, 1888) - Scattered populations from Ethiopia south to Zimbabwe.
