Subspecies
Western populations described as a separate subspecies, hylophyla, on basis of slightly darker coloration, but considered insufficiently distinct from prentissgrayi. Population from southern Somalia and north-eastern Kenya described as subspecies erlangeri, but apparently indistinguishable from orientalis.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
prentissgrayi Bowen, 1930 - Eastern Gabon, southern Congo, south-western Zaire, western Angola and southern Kenya, west-central Tanzania to northern Zambia.
orientalis Peters, W, 1868 - Coastal lowlands from southern Somalia to Mozambique, inland to Malawi, southern Zambia, Zimbabwe and northern Botswana.
vociferans Clancey, 1952 - Eastern Botswana east to southern Mozambique, south to Orange Free State and Natal.
albiventris (Scopoli, 1786) - Natal to south-western Cape Province; migrates to southern Zimbabwe.
