Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Rufous-winged Woodpecker (Piculus simplex), Stripe-cheeked Woodpecker (Piculus callopterus) and White-throated Woodpecker (Piculus leucolaemus), and all have often been treated as conspecific. Frequently lumped with White-throated Woodpecker (Piculus leucolaemus), but differs significantly in plumage details and possibly not even closely related. Includes south-western Colombian birds formerly thought to represent an undescribed subspecies of Yellow-throated Woodpecker (Piculus flavigula).
