Subspecies
No very close relatives. Forms named as peasei and adustoides are synonyms of nominate; caurinus synonymous with camerunensis.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
camerunensis Reichenow, 1921 - Disjunctly from Guinea east to south-eastern Nigeria, thence east to northern Cameroon and western Central African Republic.
regulus Sundevall, 1850 - East-central Sudan and south-western Ethiopia southern (to east of forest) to southern Zaire, Angola and north-eastern Namibia, east to Indian Ocean coast and south to eastern Cape Province; recorded once in north-western Somalia.
