Habitat
Bamboo stands in primary lower and upper montane forest, paddyfields. From 1,200 - 3,300 m.

Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Philippines (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Usually small groups.

Food
Bamboo seeds, grass seeds, figs, and possibly small insects.

Voice
A weak, thin, repeated 'prrrt'. Song is a very soft series of notes followed by four bell-like notes.

Subspecies
Sometimes separated in a monotypic genus, Reichenowia.

Proposed subspecies malayana (described from Cameron Highlands, in Peninsular Malaysia) is synonymized with borneensis, ernstmayri (from Wawa Karaeng, Lompobattang, in south-western Sulawesi) with microrhyncha, and obscura (from Sita, in western Flores) with intermedia.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • borneensis (Sharpe, 1889)   -  Peninsular Malaysia (Cameron Highlands) and northern Borneo.
  • brunneiventris (Ogilvie-Grant, 1894)   -  Northern Philippine Is (Luzon and Mindoro).
  • hyperythra (Reichenbach, 1863)   -  Java.
  • microrhyncha (Stresemann, 1931)   -  Sulawesi.
  • intermedia (Hartert, 1896)   -  Western Lesser Sundas (Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores).
  • malayana (Robinson, 1928)   -  Mountains of Malay Peninsula.


Similar Species
Pin-tailed Parrotfinch (Erythrura prasina) which has a longer, pointed, red tail and blue face.
