Subspecies albidus possibly indistinguishable from medius. Also, birds from Lombok and Sumbawa (western Lesser Sundas) somewhat intermediate between medius and malayensis. northern Sulawesi population of uncertain subspecies identity, tentatively included in albidus.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

• waitei Vieillot, 1818   -   north-western Indian Subcontinent.
• rufulus Vieillot, 1818   -  Most of Indian Subcontinent (except north-west, northern and extreme south-west) east to southern China, south to southern Thailand and Indochina.
• malayensis Eyton, 1839   -  Extreme south-western India (Nilgiri Hills), Sri Lanka, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, northern and south-eastern Borneo and southern Indochina.
• lugubris (Walden, 1875)   -  Philippines; possibly also northern Borneo.
• albidus Stresemann, 1912   -  Sulawesi, Bali and western Lesser Sundas (Lombok, Sumbawa, Komodo, Padar, Rinca, Flores, Sumba).
• medius Wallace, 1864   -  Eastern Lesser Sundas (Sawu, Roti, Timor, Kisar, Leti, Moa, Sermata).
