Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, lowland dry and moist shrubland, high altitude shrubland, dry forest, rural gardens.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Laos (B), Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Geographical variation mostly not well marked; subspecies pagodarum perhaps not diagnosable and could be subsumed within musarum. Subspecies aurata intergrades with musarum in southern Myanmar (Karen Hills).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • magna (Hodgson, 1837)   -  Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, eastern Bangladesh and north-eastern India east to southern China (south-eastern Xizang east to west, southern and south-eastern Yunnan, south-western Guizhou and western Guangxi) and northern Myanmar.
  • aurata Blyth, 1855   -  Central and eastern Myanmar.
  • musarum Deignan, 1956   -  South-eastern Myanmar, northern Thailand, Laos and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin).
  • pagodarum Deignan, 1956   -  Southern Myanmar, western Thailand and southern Malay Peninsula.
  • remota Riley, 1940   -  South-central and southern Vietnam.
