Subspecies
Sometimes considered to form a superspecies with Grey-breasted Spiderhunter (Arachnothera modesta) as they overlap in range in Borneo, but are segregated by altitude. Nominate subspecies of present species previously treated as conspecific with Grey-breasted Spiderhunter (Arachnothera modesta). Subspecies everetti then regarded as a separate, montane species, but evidence of occurence of nominate as a mountain form in Java and Bali suggests that the two are conspecific, separated from lowland taxa (now combined in Grey-breasted Spiderhunter (Arachnothera modesta)).

Proposed subspecies pars, described from R Birang (northern Kalimantan), in Borneo, considered to be inseparable from everetti.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • everetti (Horsfield, 1822)   -  Northern and central Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bornean Spiderhunter (Arachnothera everetti).
  • affinis (Horsfield, 1821)   -  Java and Bali.
