Subspecies
Nominate subspecies and virescens sometimes treated as two distinct species, with remaining subspecies ("minullum group") as a third species, on basis of markedly distinct morphological and, apparently, vocal differences. Geographical variation, however, generally rather subtle; uchidai could perhaps be included in olivaceum.

Other proposed subspecies are subflavum (described from Karnataka, in south-western India) and unicolor (Palni Hills, in southern India), both treated as synonyms of nominate, and inornatum (Nepal) and sinense (foothills of Omei Shan, Sichuan, in southern China), both subsumed within olivaceum.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • concolor Jerdon, 1840   -  South-western India (in western Ghats).
  • olivaceum Walden, 1875   -  Himalayan foothills from C Nepal east to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, south to Assam, Nagaland and Manipur), eastern Bangladesh (Chittagongs), Myanmar, southern China (Sichuan southern to south-eastern Xizang, Yunnan and Guangdong), Thailand and Indochina.
  • virescens Hume, 1873   -  Andaman Is (Middle and South).
  • borneanum Lönnberg, 1925   -  Peninsula Malaysia (S from northern Perlis and Penang), Sumatra, northern Natuna Is and Borneo.
  • minullum Swinhoe, 1870   -  Hainan I.
  • uchidai Nagamichi Kuroda, 1920   -  Taiwan.
  • sollicitans E. J. O. Hartert, 1901   -  Java (including Madura) and Bali.

Similar Species
Brown-backed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum everetti) and Thick-billed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum agile) both of which have larger, thicker bills, female with female Black-sided Flowerpecker (Dicaeum monticolum) which has olive-green upperparts and is whiter on the throat.
