Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • bengalensis Godwin-Austen, 1872   -  Northern and north-eastern India (eastern from eastern Uttaranchal Pradesh, south to northern Uttar Pradesh, northern Bihar and eastern Orissa), southern Nepal, Bangladesh and north-western and western Myanmar.
  • smithi Deignan, 1955   -  Northern and eastern Myanmar, north-western Thailand, southern China (western and southern Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong), northern and central Laos and northern Vietnam (Tonkin, northern Annam).
  • intermedia Kinnear, 1924   -  Central and southern Myanmar (east of R Irrawaddy) and western Thailand (Kanchanaburi).
  • patriciae Deignan, 1955   -  South-western Thailand.
  • dictator Kinnear, 1930   -  North-eastern and south-eastern Thailand and southern Indochina.
  • pileata Horsfield, 1821   -  Western Java.
