Subspecies
Geographical variation considerable. Subspecies laotiana often synonymized with amyae; birds of latter subspecies from Tonkin (northern Vietnam), however, much larger and longer-billed than other subspecies, and further taxonomic investigation therefore required. Birds from south-eastern Laos presumed to be assignable to laotiana. Subspecies bakeri rather poorly differentiated from davisoni and perhaps better merged with it.

Proposed subspecies mendeni (from southern Sumatra highlands) considered a synonym of diluta.

The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

  • guttaticollis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1895)   -  South-eastern Bhutan and north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, eastern Assam).
  • roberti (Godwin-Austen & Walden, 1875)   -  North-eastern Indian hill states south of R Brahmaputra, and north-western Myanmar.
  • bakeri (Harington, 1913)   -  Eastern and south-eastern Myanmar.
  • davisoni (Ogilvie-Grant, 1910)   -  Northern and western Thailand and southern Myanmar (northern Tenasserim).
  • amyae (Kinnear, 1925)   -  Southern China (south-eastern Yunnan) and Vietnam (south to central Annam).
  • laotiana (Delacour, 1926)   -  Northern, central and south-eastern Laos.
  • delacouri Yen, 1934   -  Yao Shan (east-central Guangxi), in southern China.
  • hainana (Hartert, 1910)   -  Hainan I.
  • clara (Robinson & Kloss, 1919)   -  Southern Annam (Vietnam).
  • granti (Richmond, 1900)   -  Extreme southern Myanmar (extreme southern Tenasserim), southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
  • diluta (Robinson & Kloss, 1916)   -  Sumatra.
  • exsul (Sharpe, 1888)   -  Northern and central Borneo.
  • epilepidota (Temminck, 1827)   -  Western and central Java.
  • mendeni Neumann, 1937   -  Highlands of south-western Sumatra.
