First Described (Guide)
Eyton, 1839

Habitat
Lowland primary evergreen forest. Also selectively logged forest, tall secondary forest, mixed-dipterocarp forest, swamp forest and overgrown plantations. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Thailand (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction through illegal logging and conversion to agriculture, forest fires.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Melodious Babbler (Malacopteron palawanense) and sometimes thought possibly conspecific.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • magnum Eyton, 1839   -  Extreme southern Myanmar (extreme southern Tenasserim), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, northern Natuna Is and Borneo (except north).
  • saba Chasen & Kloss, 1930   -  Northern Borneo.
