First Described (Guide)
(Müller, 1835)

Habitat
Primary and secondary hill and montane forest, forest edges, cultivated land. From 200 - 3,350 m, but usually above 600 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Usually in small groups. Often in mixed feeding flocks. Conspicuous.

Food
Small invertebrates, fruits.

Voice
Song is a repeated, loud, slurred whistle 'wee-oo...' rising then falling in pitch. Also a series of upslurred notes 'wi-wi-wi-wi-wi...'. Call is a raspy churr.

Nest
Cup-shaped, composed of dead leaves and roots, in thick vegetation about 3 - 10 m above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
1 - 2; bright or pale greenish-blue.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • major (Robinson & Kloss, 1919)   -  Highlands of Malay Pen. (northern Perak to southern Selangor and Pahang).
  • mitratus (Müller, S, 1836)   -  Extreme southern Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra.
