Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 2,285 m.

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • flaviventris (Jerdon, 1863)   -  Nepal, north-eastern India (Sikkim, northern West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur), Bhutan, eastern Bangladesh and western Myanmar.
  • drasticus Deignan, 1947   -  North-eastern India (Assam) and northern Myanmar.
  • smythiesi Deignan, 1947   -  Central Myanmar.
  • superciliaris (Blyth, 1859)   -  Eastern and southern Myanmar, southern China (southern Yunnan), and northern and south-western Thailand east to central Laos.
  • euthymus Deignan, 1947   -  Vietnam.
  • bambusarum Deignan, 1947   -  Northern peninsular Thailand.
  • sakaiorum (Stresemann, 1912)   -  Southern peninsular Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
  • papilio Deignan, 1947   -  Sumatra.
  • schwaneri (Blyth, 1870)   -  Borneo.
  • vordermani (Büttikofer, 1893)   -  Java.
