The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
flaviventris (Jerdon, 1863) - Nepal, north-eastern India (Sikkim, northern West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur), Bhutan, eastern Bangladesh and western Myanmar.
drasticus Deignan, 1947 - North-eastern India (Assam) and northern Myanmar.
smythiesi Deignan, 1947 - Central Myanmar.
superciliaris (Blyth, 1859) - Eastern and southern Myanmar, southern China (southern Yunnan), and northern and south-western Thailand east to central Laos.
