Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (mainland), Hong Kong (China), India, Laos (B), Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Noisy in flocks.

Voice
Metallic, high-pitched chirps, 'tsuic' or 'chewp'. Song consists of 4 - 5 loud descending notes.

Subspecies
Specific name sometimes misspelt as macclellandii. Described subspecies vargus (from Nepal) appears indistinguishable from and is synonymized with nominate. Subspecies binghami (Southern Shan States, in Myanmar) thought to be a colour morph of tickelli, and treated as a synonym of it.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • mcclellandii (Horsfield, 1840)   -  Nepal, northern India (eastern Himalayas from Uttaranchal east to north-eastern Arunachal, and hills from southern Assam south to Mizoram) and north-western Myanmar; reported also from south-eastern Tibet.
  • ventralis Stresemann & Heinrich, 1940   -  Western and south-western Myanmar (including Arakan); old reports from Bangladesh (Chittagong hills).
  • tickelli (Blyth, 1855)   -  Eastern Myanmar and northern Thailand.
  • similis (Rothschild, 1921)   -  Southern China (western and southern Yunnan) and north-eastern Myanmar south to northern Indochina.
  • holtii (Swinhoe, 1861)   -  South-eastern China (Guangxi, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Fujian).
  • loquax Deignan, 1940   -  North-western and north-eastern Thailand and southern Laos.
  • griseiventer (Robinson & Kloss, 1919)   -  Southern Vietnam (southern Annam).
  • canescens Riley, 1933   -  South-eastern Thailand and south-western Cambodia.
  • peracensis (Hartert & Butler, AL, 1898)   -  Southern Thailand and northern Peninsular Malaysia.
