Subspecies
Specific name sometimes misspelt as macclellandii. Described subspecies vargus (from Nepal) appears indistinguishable from and is synonymized with nominate. Subspecies binghami (Southern Shan States, in Myanmar) thought to be a colour morph of tickelli, and treated as a synonym of it.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
mcclellandii (Horsfield, 1840) - Nepal, northern India (eastern Himalayas from Uttaranchal east to north-eastern Arunachal, and hills from southern Assam south to Mizoram) and north-western Myanmar; reported also from south-eastern Tibet.
ventralis Stresemann & Heinrich, 1940 - Western and south-western Myanmar (including Arakan); old reports from Bangladesh (Chittagong hills).
tickelli (Blyth, 1855) - Eastern Myanmar and northern Thailand.
similis (Rothschild, 1921) - Southern China (western and southern Yunnan) and north-eastern Myanmar south to northern Indochina.
holtii (Swinhoe, 1861) - South-eastern China (Guangxi, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Fujian).
loquax Deignan, 1940 - North-western and north-eastern Thailand and southern Laos.
