Subspecies
Substantial overlap in characters among all three subspecies suggests that treatment as a variable monotypic species may be better. Described subspecies minutus, xanthogenys and fulvicauda are synonyms of nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
criniger (Blyth, 1845) - Extreme southern Myanmar (Tenasserim south of 11° 30' north), southern Thailand (south of 13° north), Peninsular Malaysia (including Tioman Is) and eastern Sumatra.
sericeus (Blyth, 1865) - Western Sumatra (including Musala I and Batu Is) and Lingga Archipelago.
viridis (Bonaparte, 1854) - Borneo and northern Natuna Is.
