First Described (Guide)
(Blyth, 1845)

Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp and kerangas forest, overgrown plantations. From sea-level - 850 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Usually singly or in pairs. Often in mixed feeding flocks.

Food
Small fruits and invertebrates.

Voice
A clean whistle 'phweee'. Song is a series of quiet scratchy, jumbled notes.

Subspecies
Substantial overlap in characters among all three subspecies suggests that treatment as a variable monotypic species may be better. Described subspecies minutus, xanthogenys and fulvicauda are synonyms of nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • criniger (Blyth, 1845)   -  Extreme southern Myanmar (Tenasserim south of 11° 30' north), southern Thailand (south of 13° north), Peninsular Malaysia (including Tioman Is) and eastern Sumatra.
  • sericeus (Blyth, 1865)   -  Western Sumatra (including Musala I and Batu Is) and Lingga Archipelago.
  • viridis (Bonaparte, 1854)   -  Borneo and northern Natuna Is.
