Subspecies
Putative subspecies (caniceps, rufocaudatus, cantori) merged with nominate. Subspecies medius (described from Long Petah, in eastern Borneo) considered indistinguishable from sulphuratus.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
phaeocephalus (Hartlaub, 1844) - Extreme southern Myanmar (extreme southern Tenasserim), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatra (including Bangka, Belitung, Siberut and Sipura).
