Cup shaped composed of woven grass, rootlets and plant fibers located in thich bushes.

2; pale pink heavily marked with purplish-red.
Subspecies
Subspecies name insularis previously considered invalid (and replaced by new name hachisukae), as preoccupied by a subspecies of Andropadus importunus (formerly included in expanded present genus). Subspecies porphyreus, hutzi and insularis only dubiously separable. Other described subspecies are chiroplethis (Anamba Is), billitonis (Belitung) and sibergi (Bawean I) all barely distinguishable from nominate, and treated as synonyms of it.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
plumosus Blyth, 1845 - Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim southern from 12·5° north), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia (including Tinggi I), Singapore, eastern Sumatra (including Bangka and other associated islands), Java (including Bawean I), Bali and western and southern Borneo (including Anamba Is).
porphyreus Oberholser, 1912 - Western Sumatra and islands.
cinereifrons (Tweeddale, 1878) - Western Philippines (Busuanga, Culion, Palawan). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ashy-fronted Bulbul (Pycnonotus cinereifrons).
insularis Chasen and Kloss, 1929 - Northern Borneo islands and south-western Philippines (Cagayan Sulu).
hutzi Stresemann, 1938 - Northern and eastern Borneo.
hachisukae Deignan, 1952 - Banggai and adjacent islands off north-eastern Borneo; Mapun (southern Philippines).
billitonis Chasen, 1935 - Western and southern Borneo and Belitung I.
chiroplethis Oberholser, 1917 - Anambas Islands (South China Sea).
