A lined cavity in a tree.
Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Possibly closest to Sylviparus. With exception of isolated subspecies gayeti, subspecies intergrade widely.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
sultanea (Hodgson, 1837) - Eastern Himalayas from central Nepal to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh south to Manipur and Mizoram), Myanmar, northern Thailand and southern China (western and southern Yunnan).
flavocristata (Lafresnaye, 1837) - Central and southern Thailand, Malay Peninsula and south-eastern China (Hainan I); possibly also Sumatra.
seorsa Bangs, 1924 - Northern Indochina (south to central Laos) and south-eastern China (Guangxi, Fujian).
