Vagrant to Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Iraq (NB), Israel, Japan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates.

Nest
In a hole of an embankment or cavity in a wall, lined with grass and animal hair.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 5; pale bluish-white; oval. Incubation: 12 - 1 days; mainly by female.

Subspecies
The following 16 subspecies are recognised:

  • caprata (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Luzon and Mindoro, in northern Philippines.
  • rossorum (Hartert, 1910)   -  North-eastern Iran south-central Kazakhstan south to Afghanistan. Non-breeding south-western Asia (vagrant Arabia, Israel).
  • bicolor Sykes, 1832   -  South-eastern Iran, Pakistan and northern India. Non-breeding central India.
  • burmanicus Baker, ECS, 1922   -  Central and south-eastern India east to Myanmar and southern China (southern Sichuan, Yunnan), south to Thailand and Indochina.
  • nilgiriensis Whistler, 1940   -  South-western India.
  • atratus (Blyth, 1851)   -  Sri Lanka.
  • randi Parkes, 1960   -  Central Philippines (Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor).
  • anderseni Salomonsen, 1953   -  Leyte and Mindanao, in eastern and southern Philippines.
  • fruticola Horsfield, 1821   -  Java east to Flores and Alor.
  • francki Rensch, 1931   -  Sumba I.
  • pyrrhonotus (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Eastern Lesser Sundas (Wetar, Kisar, Timor, Savu, Roti).
  • albonotatus (Stresemann, 1912)   -  Sulawesi (except northern peninsula) and Salayer I.
  • cognatus Mayr, 1944   -  Babar I.
  • belensis Rand, 1940   -  West-central New Guinea.
  • aethiops (Sclater, PL, 1880)   -  Northern New Guinea and Bismarck Archipelago. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black Bushchat (Saxicola aethiops).
  • wahgiensis Mayr & Gilliard, 1951   -  East-central and eastern New Guinea.
