Subspecies
Taxonomy uncertain. Subspecies omissus sometimes considered a separate species, distinct from neighbouring lowland forms djampeanus and kalaoensis, but may be connected through lowland and coastal peromissus. Alternatively, all four sometimes united in a separate species. Further information needed, and a comprehensive review of all subspecies required. Described subspecies litoralis (from Palawan and Sulu Is, in western Philippines) synonymized with philippinensis. Subspecies simplex has been referred to as blythi, but name "simplex" is not preoccupied within Cyornis.

The following 13 subspecies are recognised:

  • rufigastra (Raffles, 1822)   -  Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo.
  • karimatensis Oberholser, 1924   -  Karimata I, off south-western Borneo.
  • rhizophorae Stresemann, 1925   -  Sebesi I (extreme southern Sumatra), Bangka, Belitung and Java (mainly west).
  • longipennis Chasen & Kloss, 1930   -  Karimunjawa Is, north of central Java.
  • simplex Blyth, 1870   -  Northern Philippines (Luzon, Polillo, Fortune, Catanduanes).
  • mindorensis Mearns, 1907   -  Mindoro, in north-central Philippines.
  • marinduquensis duPont, 1972   -  Marinduque, in north-central Philippines.
  • philippinensis Sharpe, 1877   -  Central, western and southern Philippines, including Palawan and Sulu Archipelago.
  • omissus (E. J. O. Hartert, 1896)   -  Sulawesi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sulawesi Blue-Flycatcher (Cyornis omissus).
  • peromissus E. J. O. Hartert, 1920   -  Salayar I (off south-western Sulawesi). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Sulawesi Blue-Flycatcher (Cyornis omissus).
  • djampeanus (E. J. O. Hartert, 1896)   -  Tanahjampea I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tanahjampea Blue-Flycatcher (Cyornis djampeanus).
  • kalaoensis (Hartert, 1896)   -  Kalao I (south of Tanahjampea). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Sulawesi Blue-Flycatcher (Cyornis omissus).
  • blythi (Giebel, 1875)   -  Northern Philippines (Luzon and Polillo).
