Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest, subtropical and tropical swamp forest. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam.

Vagrant to Iran [Islamic Republic of].

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Dull-blue Flycatcher (Eumyias sordidus) and Turquoise Flycatcher (Eumyias panayensis).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • thalassinus Swainson, 1838   -  Breeds Himalayas from northern Pakistan east, discontinuously, to north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya), central and southern China (southern Xizang east to southern Shaanxi and Hubei, south to Yunnan and Guangdong), Myanmar, Thailand (except central and south) and Indochina. Non-breeding south to central and southern India, Bangladesh, central Myanmar, central Thailand and south-eastern China.
  • thalassoides (Cabanis, 1850)   -  Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
