Habitat
Understorey and bamboo within lowland and lower montane forest. From 800 - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Thailand (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status LC
Habitat destruction is the main threat.

Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. Has sometimes been thought to form a superspecies with Rufous-throated Flycatcher (Ficedula rufigula) and Cinnamon-chested Flycatcher (Ficedula buruensis), with which it shares the character of a bright blue eyelid.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • muelleri (Sharpe, 1879)   -  Southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
  • dumetoria (Wallace, 1864)   -  Java and Lesser Sundas (Lombok, Sumbawa, Satonda, Flores).
  • riedeli (Büttikofer, 1886)   -  Tanimbar Is (Larat, Yamdena). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tanimbar Flycatcher (Ficedula riedeli).
