Subspecies
Subspecies goodfellowi, rather different from others in plumage and voice, conceivably represents a separate species; floris also very distinctive in plumage and may represent a further species, although its voice is unknown. A population on Mindanao (Philippines) has highly distinct song; may be an unnamed subspecies or species, or possibly merely a vocally differentiated deme.
The following 14 subspecies are recognised:
cruralis Horsfield, 1822 - Central and eastern Himalayas, Myanmar, southern and south-central China (southern Sichuan south to south-eastern Xizang and north-western Yunnan), north-western Thailand and northern Indochina. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Himalayan Shortwing (Brachypteryx cruralis).
sinensis Rickett and La Touche, 1897 - South-eastern China. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chinese Shortwing (Brachypteryx sinensis).
goodfellowi Ogilvie-Grant, 1912 - Mountains of Taiwan. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Taiwan Shortwing (Brachypteryx goodfellowi).
poliogyna Ogilvie-Grant, 1895 - Northern Philippines (northern Luzon). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Philippine Shortwing (Brachypteryx poliogyna).
andersoni Rand & Rabor, 1967 - Southern Luzon.
mindorensis Hartert, 1916 - Mindoro.
sillimani Ripley & Rabor, 1962 - Mt Mantalingajan and Mt Victoria, on Palawan (western Philippines).
brunneiceps Ogilvie-Grant, 1896 - Negros and Panay.
malindangensis Mearns, 1909 - Mt Malindang, on Mindanao.
mindanensis Mearns, 1905 - Mt Apo, on Mindanao.
saturata Salvadori, 1879 - Sumatra. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sumatran Shortwing (Brachypteryx saturata).
erythrogyna Sharpe, 1888 - Northern Borneo. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bornean Shortwing (Brachypteryx erythrogyna).
montana Horsfield, 1822 - Java.
floris Hartert, 1897 - Flores (Lesser Sundas). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Flores Shortwing (Brachypteryx floris).
