Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rosy Minivet (Pericrocotus roseus) and Brown-rumped Minivet (Pericrocotus cantonensis). Closely related to Rosy Minivet (Pericrocotus roseus), and sometimes considered conspecific, but very distinct morphologically and differs also in moult and migration strategies. Dark subspecies tegimae sometimes regarded as a separate species, but greater colour saturation is common among Ryukyu forms of Japanese bird species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • divaricatus (Raffles, 1822)   -  Breeds south-eastern Siberia (southern from central Amurland), north-eastern China (mainly Nei Mongol, Heilongjiang and Jilin), Korea and Japan, possibly also Taiwan. Non-breeding mainly south-eastern Asia, Greater Sundas and Philippines, also regularly India.
  • tegimae Stejneger, 1887   -  Southern Kyushu and Ryukyu Islands (southern Japan).
