Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical dry shrubland, mangroves, rural gardens, plantations.

Brunei Darussalam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines (B), Singapore (B), Thailand.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with White-rumped Triller (Lalage leucopygialis) and sometimes considered conspecific. It is also suggested that it may form a superspecies with White-shouldered Triller (Lalage sueurii) or they may be conspecific.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

nigra (Forster, 1781) - Borneo and adjacent islands, and Philippines.
davisoni Kloss, 1926 - Southern Andaman Is, and central Nicobar Is (Camorta, Katchall, Trinkat).
striga (Horsfield, 1821) - Southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra (including Nias I), Bangka, Belitung and western Java (including Karimunjawa Is).
