Subspecies
Although often expanded to encompass Urocissa, present genus is distinctive in appearance of its members (the green magpies). This species forms a superspecies with Green Magpie (Cissa chinensis) and Indochinese Green Magpie (Cissa hypoleuca), and sometimes treated as conspecific with Indochinese Green Magpie (Cissa hypoleuca). Subspecies jefferyi well differentiated and has been considered a separate species. Further study, including molecular analysis, required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
jefferyi (Temminck, 1826) - Northern Borneo from Mt Kinabalu south to Mt Murud, the Usan Apau plateau and Mt Dulit. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bornean Green Magpie (Cissa jefferyi).
