First Described (Guide)
Temminck, 1831

Habitat
Tall lowland broadleaved forest and logged forest with closed canopy, layered structure and a well vegetated floor. Also swamp and heath-forest. From sea-level - 1,060 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Thailand (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction through illegal logging and conversion to agriculture, forest fires are the main threats.

Habits
Shy and secretive. Prefers to run rather than fly.

Food
Mainly insects, including cicadas, and beetles. Also spiders and worms.

Voice
A long, monotonous whistling call. Frog-like notes uttered when agitated.

Nest
Cup-shaped composed of plant fibers located on a pile of dead leaves, among the stalks about 30 cm above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2; white.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • macrocerus Temminck, 1831   -  Southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra.
  • borneensis Robinson & Kloss, 1921   -  Northern Borneo.
