First Described (Guide)
Raffles, 1822

Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp to lower montane forest, peatswamp forest, plantations. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Singapore (E) (B), Thailand (B).

Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim), south-western and southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Riau Archipelago, Lingga Archipelago, Sumatra (including Banyak Is, Batu Is), Bangka I, Belitung I, northern Natuna Is and Borneo (including Pulau Laut, off southern coast).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Voice
Cicada-like trill, starting slowly, building in pitch, volume and tempo before reaching acrescendo and finishing suddenly.

Nest
Bulky, with a side entrance, composed of grasses and twigs, suspended from a branch about 5 - 18 m above the ground, usually located near a bee's nest.

Subspecies
Birds from Banyak Is (off north-western Sumatra) described as subspecies mecistus and those from western Borneo (Saribas District of Sarawak) as subspecies kalamantan. However, there is considerable individual variation among all populations, which makes recognition of any geographical subspecies hardly tenable.
