Individual variation considerable. Several described subspecies considered probably untenable: morator (from southern Thailand), ardescens (south-eastern Thailand) and khmerensis (Cambodia and southern Indochina) regarded as inseparable from laoensis, and pallescens (Thai-Malay Peninsula) better treated as synonymous with sumatranus; orientalis possibly indistinguishable from brunnescens.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • laoensis Meyer de Schauensee, 1929   -  Southern Myanmar, Thailand (except extreme south) and Indochina.
  • sumatranus (Raffles, 1822)   -  Extreme southern Thailand south to Sumatra.
  • brunnescens Hartert, 1916   -  Northern Natuna Is and north-western Borneo (Sarawak).
  • orientalis Mayr, 1938   -  Borneo (except north-west).
