First Described (Guide)
(Gmelin, 1788)

Habitat
Coniferous and mixed evergreen montane forests. Forest edges and agricultural land. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, North Korea (B), Philippines, Russia (Asian), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Timor-Leste (NB) (P), Vietnam.

Vagrant to Mongolia.

North-eastern China to Amurland and Ussuriland, Japan and Izu Is. Winters from southern and south-eastern China and Taiwan through Indochina and Malay Peninsula to Greater Sundas, Philippines, Sulawesi and islands off north-western New Guinea.
 
Population
Estimated population is 100,000 (2010).

Habits
Usually solitary. Migration is often in flocks.

Food
Lizards, large insects, small mammals.

Voice
A loud, two-note, 'ki-wee', the second note rising then descending. Less vocal during migration.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with White-eyed Buzzard (Butastur teesa), Rufous-winged Buzzard (Butastur liventer) and Grasshopper Buzzard (Butastur rufipennis).

No subspecies.
