First Described (Guide)
(Pennant, 1769)

Habitat
Open ground, swamps, marshes, grasslands, paddyfields. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (mainland), Hong Kong (China), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia (B), Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia (Asian), Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Vietnam.

Vagrant to Brunei Darussalam, Japan.

Southern Siberia (L Baikal) and Mongolia east to Amurland, Manchuria and northern Korea; has bred in northern Burma and north-eastern India (Assam). Winters from India and Sri Lanka to southern China, Borneo and Philippines.
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 (2010).

Habits
Flies low over ground.

Voice
Generally silent. Over territory male utters a lapwing-like 'kii bii' or 'kiiy-veeee' and female an abrupt 'kee-kee'. Also a rapid chattering, 'wek-wek-wek' or 'chak-chak-chak-chak' in alarm.
