Habitat
Forested areas in hills and mountains, scrub and arid and semi-arid alpine steppe and grasslands. From 300 - 4,500 m.

Vagrant to Austria, Bangladesh (NB), Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Czech Republic (E) (B), Egypt (NB), Germany, Gibraltar, Hungary, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Latvia, Malaysia, Netherlands Antilles, Oman, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia (Slovak Republic), Switzerland, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Tunisia, Yemen.

Unknown to Albania (B), Morocco.

Southern Palearctic, from Spain, Balearic Is and Balkans through Turkey, Caucasus, Iran and Afghanistan to southern Siberia, Mongolia, northern China and extreme northern India. Winters south to Sudan, Middle East, Pakistan, north-western India and Korea.
 
Population
Estimated population is 14,000 - 20,000 (2010) and decreasing.
