Vagrant to Afghanistan, Brunei Darussalam, Russia (European).
South-eastern Iran, Afghanistan (perhaps irregularly) and Pakistan through Nepal and India to south-central China (Yunnan), Indochina and northern Malay Peninsula.

Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus), with which sometimes considered conspecific.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Long-billed Vulture (Gyps indicus) which has pale brown lesser and median coverts, dark brown remiges and pale brown, almost unstreaked, underparts.
