Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, dry forest, dry savanna, urban areas.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Brunei Darussalam (B), Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia (B), Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia (B), Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar (B), Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea (B), Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Thailand (B), Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Gambia, Sâo Tomé e Principe, Singapore.

Unknown to Guinea-bissau.

Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 10,000 (2010).

Crepuscular, hunting at dusk.

Food
Mainly bats, but also small birds and insects.

Subspecies
Genus name often spelt Machaerhamphus, but Macheiramphus has priority. Little known population of Sulawesi might refer to distinct, undescribed subspecies.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • alcinus Westermann, 1851   -  Southern Burma, western Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and north-central Sulawesi.
  • papuanus Mayr, 1940   -  Eastern New Guinea.
  • anderssoni (Gurney Sr, 1866)   -  Senegambia east to Ethiopia and south to South Africa, Madagascar.
