Habitat
Rivers, streams and creeks. Also, larger freshwater lakes, estuaries, saltmarshes. From sea-level - 1,800 m.
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Laos (B), Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.
Vagrant to Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iran [Islamic Republic of], United Arab Emirates, Yemen.
Eastern Afghanistan and Pakistan, through India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to south-central China (southern Yunnan), and thence southern and south-eastern through Myanmar to Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.
 
Population
Estimated population is 50,000 - 100,000 (2010).
