(Linnaeus, 1766)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, mangroves, seasonally flooded grasslands, marshes, swamps. From sea-level - 1,850 m.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines (B), Singapore (B), Sri Lanka, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Vietnam.

Vagrant to Nepal.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • albiventer (Swainson, 1838)   -  India and Sri Lanka to south-central China (south-eastern Yunnan) and Thailand; some may winter in southern Thailand and Malaysia.
  • obscurior (Hume, 1874)   -  Andaman and Nicobar Is.
  • jouyi (Stejneger, 1887)   -  South-eastern China and Hainan.
  • taiwana (Yamashina, 1932)   -  Taiwan.
  • gularis (Horsfield, 1821)   -  Vietnam and Cambodia through Malaysia to Sumatra, Java and southern Borneo.
  • striata (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Philippines, Sulu Is, northern Borneo and also Sulawesi, where may not be resident.
  • paraterma (Oberholser, 1924)   -  Samar I, east-central Philippines.
