Bangladesh (B), Cambodia (B), India (B), Indonesia (NB), Laos (B), Malaysia (NB), Myanmar (B), Singapore, Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Bangladesh and north-eastern India (Assam) through Myanmar and Thailand to Cambodia and Vietnam; status uncertain in Malaysia and Sumatra, but recently recorded all year round in north-western Sumatra.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Rather high-pitched bubbling sounds during courtship, possibly followed by clucks.

Suggested subdivision of family into two subfamilies places present species in Podicinae alongside African Finfoot (Podica senegalensis).
