Subspecies
In past, sometimes placed in genus Sphenurus. Closely allied to White-bellied Green-pigeon (Treron sieboldii) and Taiwan Green-pigeon (Treron formosae), and more distantly to Sumatran Green-pigeon (Treron oxyurus) species-group. Subspecies korthalsi formerly considered a distinct species on basis of emarginated third primary, but this feature subsequently found in some birds of other subspecies in present species.

Proposed subspecies yunnanensis and oblitus included in nominate; annamensis in robinsoni; and etorques in korthalsi.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • sphenurus (Vigors, 1832)   -  Mountains and foothills of Kashmir east to south-central China (south-western Sichuan, western and southern Yunnan, western Guangxi, Hainan), and south to southern Myanmar (Tenasserim), northern Thailand, Laos and northern Vietnam.
  • robinsoni (Ogilvie-Grant, 1906)   -  Mountains of Malay Peninsula and central Vietnam (Annam).
  • korthalsi (Bonaparte, 1855)   -  Mountains of Sumatra, Java, Bali and Lombok.
  • delacouri Biswas, 1950   -  Central Vietnam.
  • etorques (Salvadori, 1879)   -  Sumatra.
