Subspecies
Closely related to Sri Lanka Green-pigeon (Treron pompadora). Possibly best considered as forming a superspecies with Grey-cheeked Green-pigeon (Treron griseicauda), Flores Green-pigeon (Treron floris), Sumba Green-pigeon (Treron teysmannii) and Timor Green-pigeon (Treron psittaceus), though all have been considered conspecific. Also, considered conspecific rarely, with Sri Lanka Green-pigeon (Treron pompadora). Numerous subspecies have been described, based on minor differences of questionable significance.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • nipalensis (Hodgson, 1836)   -  Central Nepal and north-eastern India through Myanmar to southern Indochina.
  • hainanus Hartert & Goodson, 1918   -  Hainan I. (off south-eastern China).
  • curvirostra (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Widespread.
  • haliplous Oberholser, 1912   -  Simeulue I. (off north-western Sumatra).
  • pegus Oberholser, 1912   -  Nias I. (off western Sumatra).
  • smicrus Oberholser, 1912   -  Sipora, Siberut and Batu Is. (off western Sumatra).
  • hypothapsinus Oberholser, 1912   -  Islands off of western Sumatra (Mentawi Islands and Enggano Island; birds on Nias Island perhaps also this taxon).
  • nasica Schlegel, 1863   -  Borneo.
  • erimacrus Oberholser, 1924   -  Balabac, Palawan, Mindoro (Philippines).
