Freshwater swamp forest, peatswamp forest, mangroves, coastal forest, open scrub and second growth, including wooded gardens. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Brunei Darussalam (B) (NB), Indonesia (B) (NB), Malaysia (B) (NB), Myanmar (B) (NB), Singapore (NB), Thailand (E).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Forest destruction is the main threat.

Subspecies
A distinctive form of uncertain affinities.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

fulvicollis (Wagler, 1827) - Lowlands of Malay Peninsula south to Sumatra (including Riau and Lingga Archipelagos, Bangka, Belitung, Siberut).
melopogenys (Oberholser, 1912) - Nias I (off western Sumatra).
oberholseri Chasen, 1935 - Natuna Is (off north-western Borneo).
baramensis Meyer, AB, 1891 - Borneo and northern Bornean islands.
