Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Bangladesh, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines (B), Thailand, Vietnam.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Genus tentatively merged into Caprimulgus by one author, but this proposal has received very little support. Formerly placed in genus Lyncornis. Internal taxonomy requires further study.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • bourdilloni Hume, 1875   -  South-western India.
  • cerviniceps Gould, 1838   -  Bangladesh and north-eastern India east to extreme southern China and south through Indochina to northern Malaysia.
  • jacobsoni Junge, 1936   -  Simeulue I (off north-western Sumatra).
  • macrotis (Vigors, 1831)   -  Northern and eastern Philippines (Luzon, Mindoro, Catanduanes, Marinduque, Samar, Leyte, Bohol, Dinagat, Siargao, Mindanao, Basilan).
  • macropterus Bonaparte, 1850   -  Northern and central Sulawesi, Talaud Is, Sangihe, Banggai Is and Sula Is.
