Habitat
Forested areas near water including forest-lined rivers and lakes, estuaries, paddyfields, mangroves, urban parks. From sea-level - 1,600 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (B), Cambodia (B), India (E) (B), Indonesia (B), Laos, Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Singapore (E), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Vagrant to Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Nocturnal, sometimes crepuscular.

Food
Crustaceans, aquatic insects, small fish, frogs, small birds and mammals.

Voice
Various including a harsh, upslurred scream, a long wailing 'aaiee' and a fluty, melancholy 'pop pop...', repeated about 0.5 intervals.

Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Tawny Fish-owl (Ketupa flavipes), the two replacing each other geographically. Subspecies minor sometimes incorrectly referred to as "buettikoferi". Subspecies aagaardi intergrades with nominate ketupu.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • aagaardi (Horsfield, 1821)   -  Southern Assam to southern Thailand and Vietnam.
  • ketupu (Horsfield, 1821)   -  Malay Peninsula, Riau Archipelago, Sumatra, Bangka, Belitung, Java, Bali, and Borneo (except north-west).
  • minor Büttikofer, 1896   -  Nias I, off western Sumatra.
  • pageli (Neumann, 1935)   -  North-western Borneo.
