Habitat
Well wooded suburban parks, tree-lined streets.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh (B), Bhutan (B), Cambodia (B), China (mainland) (B), India (B), Indonesia (B), Laos (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Nepal (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Vagrant to Hong Kong (China).

Introduced to Singapore (B).

Himalaya, South-east Asia, and Southern China to Indonesia. Feral established in Tokyo.
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Noosy and conspicuous.

Voice
Honking 'yaink yaink' and wailing 'knyaouw' calls, very unlike other parakeets.

Subspecies
Closest relatives probably Lord Derby's Parakeet (Psittacula derbiana) and Nicobar Parakeet (Psittacula caniceps), despite size differences.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • fasciata (Müller, PLS, 1776)   -  Northern India east through Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, extreme northern Peninsular Malaysia and Indochina to southern China and Hainan.
  • abbotti (Oberholser, 1919)   -  Andaman Is.
  • cala (Oberholser, 1912)   -  Simeulue I.
  • major (Richmond, 1902)   -  Lasia and Babi Is.
  • perionca (Oberholser, 1912)   -  Nias I.
  • alexandri (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Java, Bali and extreme southern Borneo.
  • kangeanensis Hoogerwerf, 1962   -  Kangean Is.
  • dammermani Chasen & Kloss, 1932   -  Karimunjawa Is.
