Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry and moist shrubland, dry and moist forest. From sea-level - 1,800 m.

Bangladesh (B), Cambodia (B), China (mainland) (B), India (B), Laos (B), Myanmar (B), Nepal (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

SW, southern and eastern India and eastern Nepal through southern China and south-eastern Asia to Indochina, except Malay Peninsula; Andamans, Nicobars and Mergui Archipelago.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Sri Lanka Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus beryllinus). Birds of southern India formerly placed in subspecies rubropygialis, on basis of darker coloration and duller red rump, but these differences subsequently put down to individual variation and/or wear.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

vernalis (Sparrman, 1787) - North-eastern and south-western India to southern China, south-eastern Asia and Andaman Islands.
phileticus Deignan, 1956 - Thailand pen.
