(Shaw, 1810)

Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp and peatswamp forest, rural gardens, plantations. From sea-level - 1,200 m, but usually below 800 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Usually solitary.

Food
Insects, nestlings, small lizards and frogs.

Voice
A brief, descending, soft 'kauk'. A loud 'wee-oo'.

Nest
Loose construction of twigs lined with leaves located high up in thick vegetation.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 3; matte white; oval; 34 x 28 mm. Incubation: about 13 days; by both sexes.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-billed Malkoha (Rhamphococcyx calyorhynchus), the two sometimes placed in a separate genus Rhamphococcyx. Populations of Sumatra have on occasion been listed as subspecies erythrognathus.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • curvirostris (Shaw, 1810)   -  Central and western Java.
  • singularis (Parrot, 1907)   -  Southern Myanmar and Thailand, through the Malay Peninsula and into Sumatra, as well as the Anambas archipelago.
  • oeneicaudus Verreaux, J & Verreaux, E, 1855   -  Western Sumatra Islands. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mentawai Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus oeneicaudus).
  • deningeri Stresemann, 1913   -  Eastern Java and Bali.
  • microrhinus von Berlepsch, 1895   -  Bangka Island and Borneo.
  • harringtoni (Sharpe, 1877)   -  Palawan, Balabac, Calamian and Dumaran islands of the Palawan province of the western Philippines.
