Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, dry shrubland. From sea-level - 1,000 m.
Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore (E), Thailand.
Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim) and southern Thailand through Peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra, Natuna Is, Borneo and Java.

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Zanclostomus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- pallidus Robinson & Kloss, 1921 - Malay Pen., Sumatra and Borneo.
- javanicus (Horsfield, 1821) - Southern Myanmar, Malay Peninsula, Greater Sundas and Natuna Is.
