Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat loss and degradation through illegal logging and conversion to agriculture, hunting are the main threats.

Subspecies
Sometimes combined with Black-bellied Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus diardi), Green-billed Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus tristis) and Blue-faced Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus viridirostris) in a separate genus Rhopodytes. Bornean population sometimes separated subspecifically as smaller minor, but overlaps with birds elsewhere in range.
