Habitat
Lowland deciduous and evergreen forest and forest edges.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan (B), Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea (B), Philippines, Russia (Asian), South Korea (B), Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.

Vagrant to Japan, Pakistan.

South and South Eastern Asia to Indonesia. Accidental to Taiwan and Japan.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Voice
Highly vocal giving a repetitive, loud, four syllable call rendered as 'one more bottle', 'orange-pekoe' or 'kwer-kwah-kwah-kurh', the last syllable the lowest and longest.

Nest
None. Egg(s) laid in that of the foster parents. The most common species is Ashy Drongo (Dicrurus leucophaeus).

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • micropterus Gould, 1837   -  Kashmir and Himalayan foothills south through India to Sri Lanka, and east through Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Thailand to eastern China, Mongolia, Korea and Russian Far East. Winters south to Andaman and Nicobar Is, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Philippines.
  • concretus Müller, S, 1845   -  Vietnam, southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and Borneo.
