First Described (Guide)
(Temminck, 1823)

Habitat
Primary and secondary hill and lower montane forest. From 200 - 1,200 m, occasionally to 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Cambodia (B), China (mainland) (B), Indonesia (B), Laos (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Voice
Song is a fairly rapid, monotone five-note 'tu-tau-tau-tau-tau'. Call is a rapid, harsh 'kek-kek-kek-kek-krrekkkk...', the last note longer and trilled.

Nest
In a cavity of a rotten tree-stump probably 1 - 2 m above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
1 - 2; smooth, glossy ivory-yellow.

Subspecies
Populations from southern Myanmar across to southern Indochina sometimes separated as subspecies stellae, but probably indistinguishable from uniformis.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • uniformis (Robinson, 1917)   -  Eastern and southern Myanmar, south-western China (southern Yunnan) and Vietnam south to Sumatra.
  • nias Meyer de Schauensee & Ripley, 1940   -  Nias I (off north-western Sumatra).
  • oreskios (Temminck, 1823)   -  Java.
  • dulitensis Ogilvie-Grant, 1892   -  North-western Borneo.
  • stellae Deignan, 1941   -  Lowlands of south-western China (south-western Yunnan), southern Myanmar and Indochina.
